things i'd like to know how to do...
yesterday at work someone had a seziure in the waiting room. there was one other person out there at the time, and they totally freaked out and screamed for someone to do something. the girl at the front desk ran to get a nurse, but the person in the waiting room came into the office and looked directly at me and said 'you need to get out there and help her!'. i dont know if she realized that i wasnt a nurse...but i was a little stunned by that. i didnt know what to do any more than she did, yet she was assuming that i did simply because i worked in a medical office. 5 seconds later the nurse was attending to the person in need. it really made me wish that i did know what to do in a situation like that. according to the nurse, there really isnt anything you can do other than hold the person still and help them ride it out.
also, last friday we had a patient come in who was deaf and without an interpereter. she couldnt speak or read lips, so we had to communicate via written notes. it really made me wish that i knew sign language- at least more than the words to 'search, ponder and pray' and the phrase 'more milk, please'.

Wow--I had a nice belly laugh juxtaposing the primary song and what the deaf person actually wanted.
I don't know any "useful" signs either.
Sign language has one of the worst effort to payoff ratios of any language on the planet. I really wish I had learned something else.
that's actually the appeal of it, though...like being able to play the banjo or accordion. it's such an obscure thing to know that when the opportunity presents itself, people are really impressed by your skill.
